John Watson

John Watson is a supporting figure beside the louder machinery of detectives, conspirators, and political violence. His usefulness lies in witness, steadiness, and the human account of what violence actually does to bodies and reputations. In this cast, he gives the dangerous mind someone to answer to, even when that answer is only a clear sentence written after the smoke thins.

You keep looking at the person left on the floor after the clever people have named the pattern. In dangerous company, you ask what can be recorded honestly, who needs a coat, and which rumour will injure the powerless by morning. Your courage is less theatrical than persistent: you stay close enough to tell the account properly. John Watson fits because you make witness into action. You can steady a room by insisting on plain facts and human costs, which is no small talent among men who adore schemes. The disadvantage is that conscience can arrive after the machinery is already moving. You may become the decent voice that powerful friends rely on precisely because they expect you to forgive too much.
